How delete unused icloud mail account from my Apple Account

I recently changed my email address associated with my Apple account and stopped using my previous iCloud account. I tried to delete it and it won't let me, as an icon with a question mark (?) appears. On the web it tells me that that account is an alias of the new one I use and on the Macbook that it is used for Messages and FaceTime. I have checked and it is not defined that account for those services.

Is there any way to delete or deactivate that account?

Thanks!

I have this same problem. My Apple ID is an email address using a custom domain (not managed by Apple). I only have the option to change my iCloud email address. And even though it’s changed on my Apple account, when I go to Mail in iCloud settings, it still shows my original iCloud email address.

What I don’t understand is why we simply can’t DELETE the iCloud email address attached to our Apple accounts when the iCloud email address is not the primary email address on the Apple account.
