Saving music from iTunes to my iPhone

It used to be that all I needed to do was click and drag to get music from iTunes to my iPhone. Now the only music that will transfer, and it does it automatically, are the tunes/albums I've purchased from the iTunes store. Is this normal, is there away around it? Most of the music stored on my iTunes is downloaded CDs.
