NBA League Pass, CPU Usage ~100%?

NBA LP runs hot [cpu usage ~100%] when using 'full screen' or streaming advertisements; streaming gets distorted as well!

Anyone else?

my configuration:

MacBook Pro M1 [macOS Sequoia 15.1, Private Relay: OFF]

Safari 18.1 [Enable Content Blockers, Autoplay: Never, Pop-up Windows: Block & Notify, Screen Sharing: Deny, Location: Allow]

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 15.1

I have the exact same issue running MBP M1P Sequoia 15.2 and Safari 18.2.

NBA League Pass ticket number - 2630495

I have performed all the recommended troubleshooting steps as per NBA League Pass Support and as others have stated nothing has resolved it.

The final recommendation from NBA LP Support is to perform a factory reset on my MBP, however I haven't had the time to try this yet.

For context I have tried the following browsers:

  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Edge and Edge beta
  • Opera
  • Brave

None of them have the CPU usage spike, however, they are not considered "secure" browsers by NBA LP and therefore only stream live games in a max of 720p. Games look absolute trash on a 1440p 27" monitor. This is not acceptable in this day and age as far as I'm concerned. Especially given the cost of LP.

NBA LP have essentially said they won't investigate any further as they cannot reproduce the issue on their end and have closed the support ticket.

hi otis :)

I sent them an email today with my MacBook specs and screenshots of before/after CPU load via activity monitor.

hopefully that will help them take the issue seriously. I also included the URL to this forum so hopefully they'll read all these msg's and see that the problem may be a little more common than they initially thought.

can I suggest an interim temporary solution until we get this sorted out?

the streaming seems to be ok from my iPad or iPhone but you obviously dont want to watch the games on those devices, you want to watch on your TV, so get a chrome cast thingy (unless you already have a smart TV) and stream it from those devices until the Mac issue gets resolved.

hope this helps and hope we get a fix soon, cheers!

Recommendation: email NBA LP support and report your problem!

My Experience:

After a series of inquiry and responses [~24] from six [6] different CSR’s, my interaction {ticket# 2591296} with NBA LP did not resolve my issue {cannot watch an entire NBA game, start to finish, without repeated interruptions to the ‘continuous live stream’}

My Technicals:

  • Updated subscription credentials. [NBA LP Premium]
  • Network router/modem [FIOS 200 Mbps]
  • Sceptre C32 LED Curved Monitor {mirrors built-in display for MacBook Pro M1}
  • Client hardware [MacBook Pro M1, macOS Sequoia 15.1.1 {Private Relay: OFF}  CPU usage > 100%?]
  • Client browser [Safari 18.1]

  • Disabled: Enable Content Blockers
  • Allowed: Autoplay, Pop-up Windows, Location
  • ASK: Camera, Microphone, Screen Sharing
  • Page Zoom: 100%

Since 2/1/25, I have been able to 'continuously stream' NBA games, without streaming interrupts, degraded screen resolution, or screen freezes by using the ‘Studio Show’ feed!

Unfortunately, I can’t tell why; I spent all of Nov 2024 interacting with NBA LP without any determinative solution.

Recommend that you post (via email) your problem at NBA LP.

Feel free to include reference to these problem tickets, 2591296 {otis704} and 2630495 {widdz_87}, in your post!

I have the same problem while watching Bulls vs Cavs last night after installing Sequoia yesterday, replacing Sonoma on MacBook Air M1 8GB. The picture was blurry a lot and then froze not only the game but the whole computer myriad times. The only solution was to restart the game (sometimes after power off) and I’d get a picture for a short time, then another free. I must have missed 50-60% of the game.

yep, M1 MacBook Pro user here, I thought it was the NBA.com servers but I just found this post after checking my activity monitor and noticing that nba.com always spikes my CPU usage to 100% its so f'ing annoying.

how the **** do we fix this?

admittedly I do often experience problems with this website no matter what device , using my iPad to stream to the TV also chugs sometimes.

maybe I'll just try use iPad until we find a fix, I've gotta send an email to NBA.com staff soon as they over charged me for this month of the league pass so maybe I'll mention this issue and see what they say...

I'll try to report back soon

Jan 12, 2025 7:59 AM in response to widdz_87

this issue still exists for me as well [NBA LP Ticket# 2591296];

on 7 Dec 2024, I received this reply from NBA LP:

During testing, our technical team was not able to replicate the issue you are encountering. We will continue to monitor the performance of the games going forward and improve upon our services, but there will be no further troubleshooting for this. We will be sure to forward your feedback regarding your experience with this issue.

I even rebuilt Apple's 'latest & greatest' MacBook Pro M1 OS {macOS sequoia 15.2}; how silly of me!

with Private Relay {ON}, NBA LP will not stream games?

BTW, I can stream NBA games on my iPhone 11 {iOS 18.2.1}!

Dec 11, 2024 3:51 AM in response to Quantum_Campfire

great, thank you, hopefully, every Apple user will email NBA LP Support and report this issue {cannot watch an entire NBA game, start to finish, without repeated interruptions to the ‘continuous live stream’, CPU usage > 100%?}

yes, iPhone 11 {iOS 18.1.1} streaming okay!

thanks for the suggestion; however, I'm gonna stick with my current setup;

  • Sceptre C32 LED Curved Monitor {mirrors built-in display for MacBook Pro M1}
  • MacBook Pro M1, macOS Sequoia 15.1.1 {Private Relay: OFF}
  • Safari 18.1

You are fortunate.

MY USER EXPERIENCE

—————————————

I cannot watch an entire NBA game, start to finish, without repeated interruptions to the ‘continuous live stream’ …

  1. During the ‘live continuous streaming’ of ‘any NBA Game”, the ‘continuous streaming’ stops and resumes with degraded image resolution [i.e. blurred].

  1. The stopping and resumption of the ‘live continuous streaming’ of ‘any NBA Game’ with degraded image resolution [I.e. blurred] repeats itself multiple times [once, twice, thrice, x-times] before the ‘live continuous streaming’ FREEZES [i.e. streaming ceases].

  1. To resume ‘live continuous streaming’ of ‘any NBA Game’ requires a screen refresh -OR- selection of a different stream option {In-Arena, Studio}.

The aforementioned issue [1-3] is applicable to the ‘live continuous streaming’ of the AD package, other browsers [Chrome, Firefox] and occurs in either default -OR- full screen mode!
