Iphone 16 pro unable to record in Pro-res HD 120fps but can record 4K 120 fps. Anyone explain

Not sure if this issue is addressed before or not but I'm facing this issue.

I'm using a Sandisk extreme SSD with a 40Gbps cable so there's no issue of speed whatsoever. I am able to record in 4K 120 FPS but apple somehow restricts the option to record in HD 120 FPS which is bizarre. This seems like a bug because if it can do PRO-RES in 4K 120 FPS then I don't see any hardware restrictions to not allow the same in a lower resolution.

Hi ,

I'm an Iphone 16 pro user too.

I read on the apple site and it seems that you can't in HD at 120 fps, I don't know why .

From the site :

iPhone supports these image resolutions and frequencies:

  • ProRes support for 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB of storage capacity:
    • 1080p HD at 60 frames per second (fps), 30 fps and 25 fps
    • 4K at 30 fps, 25 fps and 24 fps
    • 4K at 60 frames per fps, only on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro models, when using an external storage device that supports speeds of at least 220MB per second and a maximum power consumption of 4.5W
    • 4K at 120 fps, only on iPhone 16 Pro models, when using an external storage device that supports minimum frame rates of 440 MB per second and maximum power consumption of 4.5 W
  • ProRes support for 128GB of storage capacity:
    • HD 1080p at 30 fps and 25 fps
    • 4K at 60 frames per fps, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro models only, when using an external storage device that supports minimum frame rates of 220MB per second and maximum power consumption of 4.5W
    • 4K at 120 frames per fps, only on iPhone 16 Pro models, when using an external storage device that supports speeds of at least 440 MB per second and a maximum power consumption of 4.5 W

According to this Apple Support Article, you need an external device which can record at 440 MBS.

    • See this for more information --> 4K at 120 fps, iPhone 16 Pro models only, when using an external storage device that supports speeds of at least 440MB per second and maximum power draw of 4.5W

Thanks for your response.

However, that information does not answer my question. The direct question is if my setup is able to record in 4K 120FPS PRO-RES and HD 60 FPS , then why is the option of HD 120 FPS PRORES recording not available.

I hope I am able to make my question clear.

TO NOTE: I have already mentioned my setup is meeting the requirement to record 4K 120 FPS on LOG profile. I do not understand the limitation for HD 120FPS prores on log profile.

Exactly that's what baffles me.

Also the 25fps mentioned in HD and 4K seems to be absent on iPhone 16 pro (128GB).

Present options available for me(using external storage 1TB SSD obv):

With ProRes ON:

  • HD 30/60 fps
  • 4K 24/30/60/120 fps

With ProRes OFF:

  • HD 30/60/120 fps
  • 4K 24/30/60/120 fps

My 2 questions are (for ProRes use only):

  1. How do I use 25fps mentioned at HD and 4K resolutions.
  2. If 4K 120fps is supported then why is HD 120fps not supported.

Regards

Ash
