Exchanging 3-week-old iPhone 16 Plus for 15 or 16 Pro Max

Sorry, assuming that you bought from Apple, the 14 day return for refund option has passed, even if Apple might still have the iPhone 15 in the stores.

If the store won't make an exception.....(I would be surprised if they did)......about all that you can do is try to sell the phone.

No. If you look at the link MrBill3 provided, the current models of iPhone 16 do not qualify to be traded in for another iPhone. Since you are past the 14 day return window, if you want to get another iPhone, you'll need to sell your iPhone privately to someone you know.

I think you could try trading it, but I’m not sure if Apple still sells the 15 Pro Max.

Turn the device you have into the one you want

A better idea might be to sell the 16 and try to find the 15 Pro Max at a reseller like Best Buy etc.
