How do I find a file in Time Macine backups?

Time Machine is not finding a file I'm looking for, but the file is there, I can manually navigate to it. Steps taken:

1) Open Finder window and enter search term for a file in top right corner

2) Open Time Machine from menu bar and select "Browse Time Machine backups"

3) Time Machine opens, the file search term in top right corner is blank, Macintosh HD is displayed in Time Machine Finder window

4) Even when re-entering file search term in Time Machine Finder window, "0 items" is returned.

But I know the file is on the Time Machine volume, I can find it by manually navigating the folder structure.

I need to be able to find files in Time Machine, how can I fix this?
