Given that your iPhone has been locked in lost mode due to scammers, there is a possibility that Apple may refuse to unlock it, even if you submit an activation lock support request with valid proof of purchase information. This is your initial step of action: initiate an activation lock support request at Apple Support and provide the necessary proof of purchase documentation. Additionally, it is crucial to report this incident to the police and inform Apple that you have filed a police report.

Please be aware that in some cases, Apple may not unlock the device, as I have encountered similar instances where individuals have fallen victim to this scam.

Apple provides no criteria for their decision to lock or not unlock a device. They make no mention of this being denied if you did this because of a scam.

Nor do they say anything about you having had to report this to the police. Frankly I doubt that even comes into it. That's a separate decision on your part.

Apple can completely reset a device if a person can provide sufficient evidence of valid ownership. Check the requirements and steps at: Activation Lock support request - https://al-support.apple.com/#/additional-support Apple says, "Proof of ownership documentation is required," but does not detail what currently constitutes proof other than it “must include the product serial number, IMEI or MEID.” Apple may typically require the original receipt* issued by Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller. If Apple resets the device this will give you access to the device but won't restore access to the account used to lock it. There is nothing that can be done to expedite an Activation Lock request.

From the very bottom of Apple Trade In - Apple :

"Does Apple offer recycling?

Yes. Apple Trade In lets you recycle any Apple device (including devices from Apple-owned brands) at any Apple Store and on Apple for free. That includes your batteries and old electronic products as well as free, on-demand packaging recycling for our commercial, education, and institutional customers. When we receive your device, it will be thoroughly inspected to determine if components can be recycled or reused. Whether recycled or reused, all activities relating to the processing of your device will be managed in an environmentally responsible way."

If it was rejected then you likely did not meet the criteria they provide. it is somewhat vague in parts but in general you need a receipt from an official Apple retailer, not a resale store or a pawn shop.
