Unable to connect Apple TV to iTunes

I am unable to connect my apple tv to itunes, this is an older model apple tv, I have reset to factory and completed updates, however, when I enter my details it states

"Cannot connect to itunes"

I have checked my login details and these are correct.

Apple TV (1st generation)

If your model is really a 1st generation model [A1218] from 2007, the big silver-white 7.7×7.7" slab, then indeed that will not connect for iTunes Store services anymore. If your Apple TV box is black and 3.9×3.9", then it is 2nd generation or later.
