Were to find Final Cut Pro 10.6.5?

Currently working with FCP 7 on OS Mountain Lion 10.8.5 and will like to jump on PCP X. I have MacPro 5.1 (Intel) - OS Monterey and Mountain Lion.

According to “FCP Cafe” web page I should stay with FCP 10.6.5, because it’s last stable and reliable version of FCP for Intel chip (it doesn’t support AVX function; Silicon chip does) and beyond Monterey Intel doesn’t gets any benefit (same AVX reason).

So, any idea where to find FCP 10.6.5? Or maybe how to buy it via Apple Store; I can find only last 10.8.1 version? Would appreciate any help.

The latest OS that runs in your Mac is 10.14 Mojave. I don't know how you could be running Monterey on it, unless you used some hack to install an unsupported OS, or maybe the machine identifier MacPro 5,1 is not the correct one. This should be a 2012 model.

Please clarify.

With more precise information, we can address the question of which version you might get to run on your machine.

Regardless, be aware that you won't be able to purchase FCP on that machine.

You'd need to login to the App Store with your Apple id on a Mac running Ventura or later, make the purchase, and then back at the older Mac you would be allowed to download a compatible version.

Whether that would be 10.6.5 or some other would depend on the OS running on that machine.

You have a very old machine and it would seem a waste to buy FCP.

As Luis said, you may find iMovie does all you need.

FCP 7 is completely different from FCP X. A closer match to FCP 7 would be the FREE version of DaVinci Resolve which is the editing app many are now embracing.

If your Mac is too old to run the latest version, you can download any of the older ones. In the link below scroll down the Latest Downloads section until you find a suitable one.

Thanks for your suggestion, but I need to stay with FCP, because I am trying to finish my project from FCP 7 where I have 7 part documentary series and can’t find the reason why FCP 7 is not working fluently anymore (crushing with messages “out of memory” - it’s very frustrating). Of course I have more RAM then FCP 7 can even use it. One of the reasons for crashing supposed to be to big .fcp file (over 239MB), I have split it on 7 .fcp files, but unfortunately still same problem, another reason could be to many files in Browser… so I decided to try different solution: upgrade to FCP X with stable version for my old Mac. Then transform FCP 7 project file with SendToX to FCP X files and repair the small difference what can come out and from then on working faster and “almost without software limits”. Hope it will work out.

FCP 7 only works up to 10.12 Sierra. If you are using it in Monterey it’s no surprise that it fails. In Mountain Lion it should work.

Any version of FCP since 10.0 is not compatible with old FCP 7.

The applications are very different, and you can’t open a FCP 7 project in 10.6.5. It would require exporting xml from FCP 7, and then using a third party application to convert this xml into a version that the newer FCP could use. All sorts of things could go wrong as the two applications have different paradigms.

In fact, if you want something similar to FCP 7, you are likely to have more success with Resolve or Premiere Pro.

You are looking at spending $300 plus the cost of SendToX with no guarantee that things will work better.

I suggest you try Ian’s advice and test Resolve. I think it can import thd xml from FCP 7 (but I am not sure).

As Luis pointed out, you have asked the wrong question . . . it should have been, "Why is FCP 7 misbehaving and how can I cure it?"

You have upgraded your OS too far!

Addendum: As your FCP 7 projects will contain all your original media it might be better to get Resolve and start editing again if you can't get FCP working. This may sound daunting but remember that you have already made the editing decisions so it shouldn't be too onerous to do a new edit.

As I already wrote down in my first post: “Currently working with FCP 7 on OS Mountain Lion 10.8.5 and will like to jump on PCP X. I have MacPro 5.1 (Intel) - OS Monterey and Mountain Lion.”

I know about file incompatibilities between FCP7 and FCPX, that’s why I wrote down I will have to do file transformations with SendToX.

Not risking much if buy FCP X I will need it anyway after this project (after the half of the year timeframe).

Definitely will consider to check out also the Resolve as a plan B.

Thank you both for the advice. Will post how it worked out on the end.

Sorry I missed that part. I was focusing on the OS versions and FCP, and skipped over it.

If you are planning on getting a new mac soon, I agree that you lose nothing by going with FCP now, even if the current mac is quite old, and it may not work great on it.

Just make sure that you buy FCP using your Apple id. This is essential so that you can then download and get future updates on any mac that you come to own (and, as a side note, this applies to family members associated to you in Family Sharing).
