iMessage Activation An error occurred during activation. Try again.

I’m failing to activate my phone number associated to my Apple account. Only my 2 email addresses are activated in settings from the list of options to tick under “YOU CAN RECEIVE IMESSAGES TO AND REPLY FROM”. I keep getting the same error message at each attempt. How can I activate my phone number so I can start an iMessage conversation with my number?
