Crop outline doesn't always show up when selecting Edit...

This has been an ongoing problem - happened on my 2013 Mac Pro, and now on my 2023 Mac Studio. When I import all of the pictures that I need to crop, the first 2 or 3 will work fine. After that, when I click on the Edit button, then click on Crop, the outline for cropping stops showing up. This necessitates me having to click Done, then click on Edit again, followed by Crop. This adds a ton of extra clicks when need to crop 90 - 150 pictures.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? I never had any issue like this with iPhoto (I wish Apple would have just updated that app and let things be).

The other issue is that in iPhoto, you could click, hold, and drag the crop outline, which you can not do in Photos. And I don't want to have to press any key on my keyboard to have the crop outline move from opposite corners at the same time. Using only the mouse is MUCH faster. No one has had an answer for this one yet, but I suspect it is because they are dumbing down the apps for the iOS crowd.

If anyone has any ideas, your input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I crop every picture I keep, and I don't remember a time when I couldn't crop one by grabbing the corners. There are some crazy things-- sometimes for me the cropped section doesn't stay within its normal space, but it always returns. (Sorry for bringing up a different problem.) I don't often move from one image to the next while still in Crop mode, but I just tried cropping through 10 in a row and didn't see anything weird. I wonder what the difference is?

Do you have some funny apps running in the background, or overflowing caches, or the like? Try these things:

  • Restart the computer (of course)
  • Re-start in Safe Mode. This bypasses certain potentially disruptive processes. Safe Mode is different for different computers, so see this:

Those are the most important, and most easy things to try. Then try these:

  • Use another library if you have one, or make a small test Library with a few pictures in it and see if the same thing happens. You can create a new Library by closing Photos and then option-clicking on the Photos icon. It would be good to know if this happens in other Libraries.
  • Make a new user and see if the same problem recurs with it
  • Rebuild your Photos Library--close Photos and re-launch by option-command-clicking the app icon.

The idea is to find out if the problem is with the Library, with your account, or with caches and login items, and stuff like that. One of these steps may fix the problem, but their failure to work also helps figure out what's happening.

For your feature request, since this is not Apple, no one here can do much about that. In Sequoia, we can now copy a crop from one picture to another, and that's sometimes helpful. I sometimes use the "move the whole crop frame" feature in GraphicConverter, but for most of what I do in Photos I don't think I need it. But you can leave a feature request with Apple, here:
