Unable to update MacBook Air as it doesn't have enough space

I have a MacBook Air 2017 with 8 GB of memory. I have never updated my os system, but I would like to. My laptop tells me there isn't enough space but everything I have on it is stored in the cloud. What do I need to do so I can update?

Thank you so much. I am not very familiar with the file system on Mac’s so had no ideal where to look.

I haven’t tried the suggestion yet but will the results post as soon as I do
