Connect MacBook Air to apple display?

Hi. I have a problem I can’t figure out.

I am trying to connect an old Apple monitor with three built-in cables to my new MacBook Air 2024. The new MacBook will detect the monitor in Displays settings, but nothing shows up on the monitor.

I was using a USB-C connection hub to connect the monitor to my old MacBook 2017 and it worked great.

Before I spend money on more adapters, just wondering if anybody had any thoughts? Thank you in advance.

Thank you - yes - that's the diagnosis. The Ioger still works with an older macbook (c 2017) but that seems to be the problem: the MDP needs to be Thunderbolt so as Varjak said, I think I need a new hub.

There are many Thunderbolt 3 and 4 docks and hubs into which you could plug the 27" LED Cinema Display, using either a

  • Full-size DisplayPort (male) to Mini DisplayPort (female) adapter, or a
  • USB-C (DisplayPort) (male) to Mini DisplayPort (female) adapter

depending on the specific arrangement on the dock or hub. Here the computer speaks Thunderbolt to the dock – but the display is unaware of that since Thunderbolt is not involved in the connection from the dock to the display.

Most plain USB-C hubs and docks have internal DisplayPort to HDMI adapters and offer video in the form of HDMI, which is not convenient for attaching a LED Cinema Display.

Do not plug the 27" LED Cinema Display directly into an Apple Thunderbolt 3-to-2 adapter. While the connectors will physically fit, you will not get a signal. The LED Cinema Display wants to get a DisplayPort signal, and doesn't understand Thunderbolt. The TB 3-to-2 adapter only translates Thunderbolt, and does not know how to make its TB 2 side appear to be a Mini DisplayPort to a display.

I could be mistaken, but those heads look like Mini DisplayPort, USB-A, and MagSafe. The fact that there are three of them rules out the possibility that this is a 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display that wants a Thunderbolt signal.

I believe that you will need a USB-C (male) to Mini DisplayPort (female) adapter, or equivalent, to connect the video. You will also need to connect the USB-A head, in one way or another, to control the brightness of the display.

I'm guessing that the Iogear hub provided both adapters when you were using it with the old MacBook. If that is the case, I'm not sure why things would stop working now. Maybe someone else will have some ideas.
