I have a pair of HomePods used as tv speakers via an Apple TV. What speakers are recommended to add to the home cinema experience - would another two HPs add to it ? Would the Apple TV be able to work other manufacturers devices to the maximum potential ? Would they all get along ?

You can AirPlay to more than one pair. It’s not true home theatre stereo though . If you have Apple tv 4k the one pair can be set as stereo then you add the other pair as the temporary or use the control center to add extras.
