Did Apple abandon the iPod Shuffle(s)?

I dug out my old iPod Shuffle (2nd Gen) and wondered what music was on it since I haven't seen it for years. Plugged it in and it charged (shock!).

It's seen by the system (see screenshot) but neither Finder nor Apple Music recognize it.

After doing a handful of searches I landed here and see MANY people are asking similar questions.

Which makes me wonder, did Apple just quietly drop support for older iPods in the current OS?

I understand the device in my hand is ancient but it still functions. Why would Apple push it out of the boat?

Your iPod should be visible in Finder. However, if you are subscribed to Apple Music (the subscription service), the iPod will not be seen. This is because the Shuffle cannot use Apple Music.

The Shuffle can still be used to store and play music that you have purchased, using Finder (or on older Macs, or a Windows PC, iTunes).

Note, music available through an Apple Music subscription is not purchased. It is effectively loaned to you while you are a subscriber.
