How to stop podcast autoplay on ipod nano 3rd gen?

I've been listening to podiobooks for years. They download and play as podcasts; thus each chapter is the is equivalent of a single podcast episode. When played back on my ipod nano 3rd gen, each chapter would stop at the end, and I would then need to start the next one manually. That has suddenly changed. It now automatically starts playing the next chapter. I do NOT want it to do that! I can't find any settings in my iTunes app (v. 12.8.3.1) nor in the iPod settings that show up when I connect it to iTunes (Software v. 1.1.3).
