Apple Remote not learning sky glass remote.

Just set up ATV 4K but can not get the remote to change the volume on my sky glass tv. It will power up and down via hdmi cec. But no volume or mute control. Did not work when setting the remote on auto or HDMI cec. So thought I would try to get it to learn the remote. But the progress bar dose nothing. Just says no signal detected after a few seconds. Spent many hours trying to google my way out of this. Then when I looked if the sky remote was IR or Bluetooth it turned out it did both. So I set the sky remote to IR (hold down 4 and 6 for 6 seconds) thinking that had to be it. (It’s definitely in IR mode as won’t work behind the sofa) but still nothing. Have reset the ATV the remote and repaired it all several times. Just can’t get it to revive an IR signal from my sky remote for the ATV to learn. The preyDesperately want to get rid of sky but stuck with the sky glass and my partner won’t like two remotes anyone help me out?
