Desire verbal response to Hey Siri when using Apple Intelligence

When I used to say Hey Siri, Siri would respond with yes, or something similar. With Apple Intelligence, she doesn't. I'm not always close enough to see my phone light up so a verbal response to my Hey Siri would be nice. How do I get Siri to respond to Hey Siri, verbally?

Yes, everything is set to preferred spoken, even rebooted. Turned off and on the features first. Siri talks when using maps, for instance. But when I say "Hey Siri", I used to get a spoke "uh huh", now the screen just glows, I discovered I can speak to Siri in that mode, but I just prefer a spoken response to "hey Siri". This is an iPhone 16 Pro Max, with 18.1. Everything works but for that one thing in the beginning.

I subscribe to iPhone life and watch their "teaching" videos, this hasn't come up in their videos so far. I'll try waiting, this week's course is Apple Intelligence, so hopefully, they do have a Q&A too. Last resort I'll call Apple Support, hands down the best customer support around, just seems so minor to bother them with, but they always have an answer.

Turning up the volume isn't enough if you're across the room. The ching noise just isn't loud enough and the lights, while pretty cool, aren't visible if I'm busy cooking or driving, or if the phone is in my purse. Yes, I "Hey Siri" with my phone in my purse. It never used to be an issue because she would still hear and respond verbally. I think Apple dropped the ball on this one. They didn't plan on people being busy, and not staring at their phones.
