FCP 10.8.1 & FCP 11.0 freezes after clip transform

I have upgraded to FCP 10.8.1 and then to 11.0. After applying a keyframed clip transform/resize, picture playback freezes. Audio still plays.

Restarting the application doesn't help.

This problem doesn't happen on FCP 10.7.1, so currently I am unable to use the latest upgraded versions of FCP.

I am running on a Mac Studio M1 Max, 64 GB memory. Mac OS Sonoma 14.1

I have a Bluetooth track pad and a wired Wacom tablet attached. Someone suggested plugging in a wired Mac mouse instead, but that doesn't make any difference.

Thank you in advance for any help and advice to get this sorted.

Whenever the application crashes, delete its preferences.

This is not a problem that I've seen mentioned here before, which suggests that probably it is something peculiar to your installation.

Do you have "three finger drag" active in the Trackpad settings? There was a problem with that, which may or not be in play in your case; also, maybe it also happens in version 11 (I can't test right now).

Try disabling this trackpad feature if it's on, and see if it helps.

If the problem persists, it could be related to something else.

Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here. Use the "additional text" button and paste the report into the text box.

I have a copy of the .plist file from my FCP app while it is well behaved. I don't delete prefs, I just replace the .plist file. Fortunately, I've not needed to do that in ages, and don't remember where it goes. Yikes, I should have written that down.

But spaces and such should not be deleted, only preferences (settings).

Hi Luis

Thank you for your reply.

I deleted the preferences as you suggested and it seems to have fixed the issue.

I don’t like to delete the preferences if I can help it, because it means having to reset a lot of personal settings (eg. saved workspaces, export destinations, etc.)

Thankfully, it’s not something that I have needed to do very often. But I was happy to do it on this occasion as it helped sort out my issue.

Thanks again.

Workspaces are easy to set aside, and restore in case of need.

They live in ~/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro/Workspaces

You could save a copy somewhere else and restore them to the proper location after deleting preferences.

Also: when deleting preferences, a compressed file named VideoAppDiagnostics.... (with a timestamp and file extension .tar.gz) is created in your desktop and contains workspaces, preferences, and destinations.

Double click to unpack and see what it has.

I am having trouble finding where the destinations should go, they seem to live in a more secluded place that workspaces (or maybe it's me).

Thanks again Luis

I replaced the Workspaces from the VideoAppDiagnostic folder and saved them on an external SSD.

In regard to the "Destinations", I generally tend to use the ones I have created in Compressor. In the FCP 'Destinations' preference tab I drag Compressor Presets into the left hand column and select the Custom folder which contains the presets.

In the finder mine are in:

~/Library/Application/Support/Compressor/Settings

Hope that helps.

All of a sudden this program is a disaster. I immediately regret updating to FCPX 11.

The application is 100% unusable. I'm working on a custom piece (10 seconds long, 25p, 916 x 1300 vertical) and the keyframed motion is causing the piece to drop frames and freeze altogether. There are also other issues (stuck on "importing media" for some reason, little red-box/navigation tool disappears when zoomed in, the application won't even quit on its own now.)

I have force quit and restarted, reset FCPX preferences, created new versions, timelines, everything.

How is it that Apple releases new versions that are so full of bugs? And without using TimeMachine, is there anyway to downgrade back to 10.xx? Once again, I'm gonna have to go back to After Effects and Premiere.

I'm on a MBP M1 with 64GB RAM and loads of space. Sequoia 15.1

Except my issues aren't different. I'm using the same hardware as the OP. Like the OP, I upgraded to FCPX 11.0 and after applying keyframes to transform and animate clips, the program started freezing on me. After troubleshooting in the same ways as the OP (and the ways you recommended) FCPX still didn't work. The reason I chose to post it here was to illustrate that the OP is not alone in this, and it's quite possibly not a problem on his/her end, but with the software release.
