Imac 2017 will not go into erase disk mode
have tired to erase 1 TB hard disk to turn in computer. Cannot erase will not go into erase mode I just get a lock. Enter my password and nothing

The computer present a Lock Screen ?
That seems to be a Firmware Password Lock
You would have to Turn OFF the Firmware First
Set a firmware password on your Mac
Followed by the steps outlined in the next link
