Home button not working, but fingerprint sensor and double tap is still working.

Home button doesn't work. Fingerprint sensor works fine, and double-tap on the home button works as well. It's Iphone8 Plus, so the button is not real. There's no physical damage on the phone.

I'm fairly confident it must be software / IOS related or the fingerprint + doubletap wouldn't work. However no reset, restart etc. has fixed it so far. "Forced upgrade" to new model is the only available fix, maybe ;-)

I have tried:

  • Checking various settings (I may have missed some)
  • Restart and forced restart
  • Forced reset
  • Reset to factory settings

Btw, for other people with similar issues, there is a great guide here, that may help you. It didn't fix it in my case, though: How to Fix iPhone Home Button Not Working - YouTube

If anyone find a fix, please let me know.

If a reset to factory settings doesn't solve the problem, then it might be a hardware issue and might need to get your iPhone serviced at you nearest Apple store. You can get in touch with Apple support at: https://getsupport.apple.com/. In the meantime, you can use AssistiveTouch to go to the home screen. Learn how to enable it here: Use AssistiveTouch on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

It started working again now, by itself. Here's a complete summary for anyone else experiencing similar issues:

Situation: The home button didn't work. The fingerprint and double tap actions worked, but the click and double click did not.

Over 5 days I tried the following actions (For help with the bold actions, see the guide I linked to above):

  • First I performed enable Assistive Touch to be able to use the phone at all. Note: It can be tricky doing this when the Home button doesn't work. You may have to muddle around with things like opening the camera first, unlock with fingerprint, switch the screen on/off, use favorite apps (swipe right) or use Siri, simply to get into the Settings app and enter the Accessibility menu.
  • After that I explored various settings making sure I hadn't changed anything
  • I confirmed the button was clean, not physically damaged. I also tried plugging in a power cable, to add some back pressure when clicking.
  • I tried powering the phone off and restarting it several times including forced restart.
  • I tried to recalibrate the home button. I did this 10 times in a row
  • Then I tried reset to standard settings
  • Finally I removed the back cover and enabled back tap (Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap), to make the phone somewhat useful, since this is easier than assistive touch. Note: The back tap was sluggish and didn't work very well to begin with.

By now the Home button still didn't work, however:

  • Several hours after enabling back tap the home button started working again - very sluggishly. I really had to massage and "press" hard (It's not a physical button so "pressing hard" shouldn't do anything). In the mean time I had been using both back tap and assistive touch interchangeably.
  • Gradually the button started working better and better, while I kept using it, and now, one day after, the button is back to normal.

I have no idea what is going on, but my best guess is that all the steps above got something reset, restarted or recalibrated.

I figure I may not be the only one with this problem. Therefore the comprehensive guide. Best of luck, if you have a similar problem. Use the guide I linked to, or google similar videos using keywords in bold. Video guides really helps a lot.

Troubleshooting Home Button:

A. Start here: Learn what to do if a button or switch isn't working.

B. Overview this Link:

  1. Go Here: Use the Side Button, Home Button, and Other Controls on your iPhone - Apple Support
  2. Scroll to: On iPhone 8 models and earlier
  3. As it Reads: "Home button with Touch ID: Use the Home button to unlock your device or make purchases using Touch ID. Press the Home button once to go to the Home screen. Press the Home button twice to bring up the App Switcher."

Report this to Apple:

Do your Part: Let Apple know what exact is going on. Apple may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what is occurring, and what bug fixes to include in updates to come. Apple will know nothing of this, if you don't report it to them.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: that this all began after installing an update. Include the URL of this thread
  4. Proceed from there as necessary
