You shouldn't post personal information here. And your issue is not something for an Apple user forum, you should be speaking with your mobile phone provider. Also, SMS has nothing to do with Facetime, it is text messaging.

The number posted is not the OP's personal information - it is the UK mobile number the FaceTime SMS is being sent to by the iPhone.

Yes, it does. It has been documented frequently that FaceTime sends a "silent SMS" to initiate a FaceTime call.

I wasn2t aware of the international charges as well (I thought it would be just local sms as the iPhone never indicated anything about which number it was sending the sms to). I was fiddling around with the settings, and now I ended up with 12! international SMS charges on my bill..

I have only tried using FaceTime once, and I see a sms charge around the time I did use that.

I have turned it on and off quite a few times, so I can understand the number being so high, but what I'm wondering is this:

Does iPhone send out the international SMS "each" time it starts a Facetime session?

This is important.

Thank you.

FaceTime on an iPod identifies you as an email address and not your mobile number. It sounds like the text message is being sent as part of the FaceTime registering process on an iPhone in order to find out your phone number.

I wonder if the problem people are having with registering for FaceTime on their iPhone is due to not being able to send a text message internationally.

Hi Kim,

I have the same issue, I purchased a new iPhone 4S and since I have received 16 International SMS charges @ 0.45c each, that I have not sent.

I contacted my service provider who were kind enough to spend a considerable amount of time to investigate the issue in which was esculated to a higher technical support level as they to are keen to find out what the issue is.

They called me back as they were very interested in the problem and we went through the process again to ensure that they did not miss anything, they also considered all purchased apps that I had installed in which all were fine.

They could not find what the problem is however they confirmed that the numbers that the SMS were sent to are UK based I have seen the numbers posted on several sites and one of the numbers is the same as the one you posted.

My service providers were kind enough to tansfer me to Apple, I explained the issue to the Apple technical support guy and he to could not help me as they are not aware of the issue or that an iPhone can send silent sms he also said that their would be no reason that Apple would use any UK based numbers or outlets for support.

I turned off imessage and they stopped, I turned on imessage and they started again. The strange thing is I have never used imessage or sms to send messages especially internationally.

My concern is apart from the ongoing cost, If this is part of the imessage process it is very costly compared to SMS as I do not pay for sms service. I also thought that imessage is a free service.

My other concern is if these are silent sms been sent without consent and it is part of the imessage process why have we not been advised of the costs and also of the process, also what other unauthorised communcation is been transmitted without our knowledge.

I was charged International SMS as well, the same day I updated to IOS5

I just spoke with Apple support who claimed they have never heard of this issue before.

After a I was placed on hold for some time, they said that a silent message should be sent via the handset, and Apple has agreements with the carrier that the SMS will not be billed.

They also said that it has been this way for some time, so it is strange that it is now being charged.

He is unsure if that changes have been made on Apple's side or the carriers side that is causing these SMS to be charged.

Just after having written my comment on 24th of october, I called the Apple support (Belgium-France) to hear they never heard anything about that problem. They've also said they'll contact me back to let me know what to do... Nothing so far.

I'm currently re-calling them and today they tell me they that even if I called 15 days before, they never heard anything about that....😠

It seems the info is not relayed...so what's the utility of that service?

I'll let you know the follow of this. Please keep us in touch when you find something.

For now, as the SMS send is an international call (for me), I've disabled the option that let me send international call or SMS but this can only be temporary...

International sms charge !
