Google Contacts not showing up in macOS Apple Contacts

I have a brand new 16-inch MacBook Pro with an M4 Max and running Sequoia 15.1 (24B2083). It's a fresh install without restoring a time machine backup.

I added my Google account under Settings > Internet Accounts and activated Contacts syncing.

Whatever I do though none of the Google contacts show up in my MacBooks's Contacts app.

Google calendar events sync properly by the way so the Google account is properly set up on my Mac.

I remember that there's always been issues with syncing between Google and Apple contacts. None of the tricks worked that I found

  • Creating a note in the Google folder (this worked a couple of years ago when I ran into the same problem)
  • Delete all folders called Contacts in ~/Library/Containers

This is a very annoying issue :/
