My life's work is on older CD/DVDs

I'm a lifelong pro photog now 76yrs old. All of my work over 40yrs of shooting automotive/fashion is on CDs and DVDs(over a thousand) that now will not mount, open on my Mac running 10.15.7 Catalina. My research has told me the issue is when Apple upgraded to 10.15 they omitted the ability for a Mac to read the older formats(HFS+?). ALL of my CDs and DVDs were written long before that release, in 1990s-2012.

Is there anything I can do to open these disk, copy them to a hard drive?

Can I backup my Mac and then install an older OS that will read the older disk then when done reinstall OS 10.15.7?

My life's work is on these. Help?

The last version of macOS that could read HFS was Mojave so maybe those optical disks were formatted as HFS. The optical drive might also have its laser worn out. Or the "immortal optical disk" dyes could have been "rotten" and then sadly there is no much cure.

Does your Mac support Mojave? To find out, Google is, erm, your friend. Another way to find out is to copy paste this to /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app...

softwareupdate --list-full-installers

...if it lists:

* Title: macOS Mojave, Version: 10.14.6, Size: 5896894KiB, Build: 18G103, Deferred: NO

...then you are good to go and can download and install it on an external disk either via the Terminal or via the links below. Then install, Option-boot, to it and hopefully copy those precious HFS CDs to a safe place.

I bet there are services that can do that for a fee.

Your findings are correct. Mojave was the last version of macOS that could read the original HFS format. You'll have to use an older Mac to copy all of that data off to an external drive.

Whether or not or not you can install Mojave or earlier on your Mac will depend on how old the Mac is. If it shipped with a version of macOS newer than Mojave, then you will not be able to install that OS, or an older one on it.

If you can, then yes, make a backup of the Mac, first. But you don't need to erase it. Use Disk Utility to create a hard partition big enough to hold on install of Mojave, High Sierra or such. The Mac will automatically restart to that install when it's done installing. Copy your disks to another, more up-to-date drive format.

The advantage of the hard partition is you don't have to erase and restore anything. Once you have your CDs and DVDs copied, restart to the newer OS and use Disk Utility to delete the older OS. Done. Not need to reinstall the newer OS and restore your data. It's already there.

Kurt's advice is good, but once you've got your data off the CDs and DVDs you need to back them up somewhere else too. Writable DVDs and CDs degrade with time - a friend was an early adopter and some of his oldest DVDs can't be read because the discs have degraded. Buy some removable storage, back up all your work more than once and keep at least one of the copies off-site, like a friend or relative's house. If you use image management software then keep a backup of the catalogue with the images. Always keep at least one set of 'vanilla' copies - i.e. not ones made with Time Machine (or any other proprietary backup software) which need the same software to recover it. Finally, test your backups periodically to make sure you can recover/restore files OK.

Good luck.

Much of my work is on external HD but somewhat edited. I want to access the originals, those made right after the shoot many on the plane home or in the hotel room. Raw. I'm sure all of you can imagine having to mount +-1000 disk, copy them to HDs, and then open the one's I want to see. I'm 76 and know those cds spin pretty slow.

Bonjour,

turns out my mac with Catalina can read the older dvds but not cds so many(not sure how many I have of each) of my original files are available. Thanks for all the advice, wish Apple had made me aware that I'd lose that capability and I would likely stayed with Mojave. In case anyone is curious, not sure this is permissible but I'm not looking for work so it's just for reference, ***
