Ipod touch 4th gen not restoring through recovery mode

I've forgotten my passcode for my ipod touch so I followed the instructions from apple to put my ipod touch into recovery mode using my mac (macbook air M3, 2024) I then go ahead to click "restore and update" and then after it supposedly completes the download (on my mac) it just kicks my ipod right out leaving my ipod screen with the "cable plug in to itunes" sign until it goes back to my original lockscreen state. I've retried multiple times - how can I restore it? or is it hopeless...
