icons at bottom of Mac Air screen gone. How to get them back

I have problems with Safari periodically freezing, which I usually solve by quitting Safari and getting back on. Today, though, I had left full screen on and when I got back on and noticed that and changed it to normal, the list of icons, including Safari, Pages, etc. was gone, and I couldn't figure how to get it back.
