Does the 11” iPad Air M2 (2024) *require* a separate, external keyboard or is the Onscreen Keyboard still available/offered? I really don’t want to purchase yet another piece of hardware.

A separate external keyboard is never required for any iPad or iPhone. The onscreen keyboard is a defining feature of these devices and always available. External keyboards are totally optional.
