iPhone doesn’t show me the option to merge duplicate contacts
After several months of struggling to merge duplicates in Contact app I finally figured it out. Like many others the "Merge Duplicates" was not accessible for them. From a subreddit thread I was able to find that if all the contacts are associated with different emails, they will not be eligible for "merge" even if you're in "All Contacts" List in the Contacts app.
- First make sure your Default Account for Contacts is set as iCloud: Settings > Apps > Contacts > Default Account > iCloud
- Go to your Contacts app and save the contacts in case any are deleted for whatever reason you have access to them
- Open Contacts app (NOT Phone) > on the top right click "Lists"
- Press and hold on each contacts account you have (eg: iCloud, Yahoo, Gmail etc)
- Click "Export" (select all fields or whatever fields you prefer) then click Done.
- Either send these contacts to your phone number or click "Save to Files"
- Return to Settings > Apps > Contacts > Contacts Accounts (Turning off Contacts)
- Go into your other email addresses that caused the duplicates (eg: Gmail, Yahoo) and toggle off Contacts
- It will ask "Are you sure you want to continue? All Gmail contacts will be removed from your iPhone" since these have already been backed up in steps above, you click "Delete from My iPhone"
- Repeat with other associated email addresses
- Go into your other email addresses that caused the duplicates (eg: Gmail, Yahoo) and toggle off Contacts
- Toggle the Contacts back on
- Return to Contacts app and you should be prompted to merge duplicate accounts, I chose that option. Make sure you don't skip the step setting your default account to iCloud otherwise the merge option may not populate.
Following all those steps, I still had 1 duplicate account not caught but 1 is better than the thousands I had previously.
GOOD LUCK to anyone this helps!
