Preview problem after Sonoma upgrade

I recently upgraded a 2018 Mac Mini (16GB, 128GB) from Ventura to Sonoma by downloading the installation DMG and running it (not a clean install). Since then, the Preview app has been oddly sluggish. The first image file opens quickly, but after that the second and third take progressively longer (spinning beachball) and the forth typically pushed the app into non-response mode. Size or type of image file does not seem to matter. Another symptom is that the "Open Recents" list is empty, always. Never ran into this problem when this machine was on Ventura.

I found the Preview saved state folder in ~/Library and got rid of it. That seems to have resolved the sluggishness issue, but the empty "Open Recents" list is still with me. Whatever problem this is has either been only partially fixed or fixed in a way that may not last long. Any thoughts? I'd rather not try a clean install, despite that being my preferred route, because this is a company machine and a clean install means I lose use of the computer for a week, minimum.

This is an educated guess.

Running with 16 RAM is fine but with the smallest of small 128 GB SSD Drive with macOS 14 Sonoma

I think that most of the current and further issues with Slowness in Preview is related to Space On the Drive or lack of space

The computer that has been upGraded from Ventura macOS 13 and Sonoma macOS 14

The Space occupied by the Operating System alone, could use up to between about 15 GB to about 18 / 19 GB

Then, there are the Third Party Applications that may account of 8 GB or more, depending on the configuration

Factor in Personal Data files, pic, music, vid, doc, presentation files, etc

The really does not bode well for this computer experience

Sadly it maybe so

Though, all is not lost if you can invest in and acquire a good SSD Enclosure and a suitably Larger SSD for the enclosure

Install the OS to the external drive, setup the Startup Disk to the External Drive

Presto and voila

www.owc.com is often suggested for such needs or wants

They may even have an Enclose and SSD drive that is specific for this Mac Mini of 2018 🤞
