It depends on which iPhone and which MacBook Air you have. Your tag line says that you are running macOS 14.4 (Sonoma), which implies that your MacBook Air must be from 2018 or later, and must therefore have USB-C ports. (Earlier MacBook Airs had USB-A ports.)

  • iPhone 15 and 16 series phones have USB-C ports. You would want a USB-C to USB-C cable.
  • Most earlier iPhones have Lightning ports. You would want a Lightning to USB-C cable, or a Lightning to USB-A cable plugged into an Apple USB-C to USB adapter (or equivalent)
  • iPhones predating the iPhone 5 have a 30-pin dock connector. I believe they would have come with a cable that went from it to USB-A. You would plug that cable into an Apple USB-C to USB adapter (or equivalent).

Whatever type of cable you use, make sure that it is rated to support data transfer, and is not just a charging cable.
