iPhone backup says 34gigs with all apps shut off

My iPhone 14 Pro hasn’t backed up in some time, I keep getting the prompt that storage needs to be upgraded. The thing is, I have shut off all photos, music and all apps aside from a couple hundred MB worth of files and have no backup for this phone currently stored in iCloud, and yet it says my next backup will be 34 gigs. I can’t help but feel like it’s just a ploy to get me to pay for storage, even though next to nothing is backing up. Why would my “next backup” show 34 gigs when there is nothing to backup?

Messages is turned off in backup. So I can’t see why that would require any backup space.

that said, your reply made me go to messages settings and I chose the option to delete messages after 1 year and confirmed the delete. I then go back to iCloud backups and look and it says next backup is down to 3gigs instead of the 34.

why would old messages stored on my phone require iCloud backup space when messages is turned off in iCloud. Baffles me.

anyway I’m backed up now, that was the solution.
