Does hiding an app have any effect on its widget? I know hidden apps don’t receive alerts, notifications, etc. so does that mean the widget is also hidden?

You are correct in that if you hide an app, any existing widgets related to the hidden apps that you have placed before hiding it will be removed, and you cannot add the app's widgets from the widget gallery. (It will simply be hidden from the list, just like the hidden app).
If you unhide the hidden apps that previously had their widget placed on the Home Screen or the Today View, the widget won't be restored to its previous position, you will have to place its widget again.
