It seems from apple technical department the new USB-C version of the AirPods max I have just bought cannot be hard wired to and aircraft entertainment system, unlike the older lightning version.

Thank you. I have returned the USB-C AirPods and purchased the older unit, and with the money I saved ordered the audio cable.
Talking to apples sales department, they had no idea about this issue with the new units!
Yeah, according to this information from apple support:
You can use your AirPod Max with a lightning port to connect to analog audio sources like the in-flight entertainment system on a plane: plug a Lightning to 3.5 mm Audio Cable into your AirPods Max to use them in wired mode.
