You can look in Control Center to see what app is accessing the microphone or camera.
Assuming you are not looking at app-related controls that can reside on either or both ends of the dynamic island, and also not looking at the microphone or camera indicators mentioned above, then that’s likely the TrueDepth camera system you’re seeing. More on that follows:
