Receiving Virus alerts on my iPhone
Accompanied by advice to install Virus Protection on my iPhone. Do I need to do this, or is this a scam?

It's a scam. A message warning of malware will only be legitimate if it's in response to manually starting a scanner or uploading a file to a website.
