Hi, I have BT Internet Mail account and deleted a number of emails by mistake. Not recoverable by BT and neither do they appear in trash or deleted items, so is it likely that they will be backed up on iCloud?

No, wouldn't be backed up to icloud your email should reside on BT's server.
If it was set up as POP 3 account then the emails are gone.
BT support should be the one to help you recover email since you're using their platform.
