When I say "hey siri" and a request for function, i.e., read message, text a contact, Siri takes a few seconds then just response with "uhm hum". I have to wait until the Siri prompt display goes away and then repeat my request and second time Siri has no problem.

Wondering if updating your iOS version to the latest one may help!
(NB: It is always wise to back-up your data first, if you choose to update.)
