FCP 11 Fails To Update 10.8.1 Library

A reasonably large FCP 10.8.1 Library (615GB), an ongoing client project which I’ve used regularly for several years without issue, failed to update in FCP 11.

After an hour of the spinning beachball FCP 11 was clearly 'not responding' and had to be force quit. The Error Report confirmed FCP had hung.

This failure occurred with a duplicate of the working Library so nothing has been lost but the incident means that currently, for me, FCP 11 is not fit for purpose with paid work in progress and I have reverted to using FCP 10.8.1 which had been zipped before upgrading.

I sent feedback to the Apple FCP team and also added my voice to those who have noted that Custom Overlays in FCP 11 don't display correctly, or at all. (Discovered when I was earlier able to update a smaller non-critical library with FCP 11.)

I shall await a bug fix update and try opening the same FCP Library when the next release is issued.

Thanks for the response and queries. Normally I leave the cache stored in the library along with all media. At your suggestion I removed the cache for this library to an external folder and deleted all render files for good measure. Tried again to launch it with FCP 11.

The library update went through the usual routine then stalled on loading one of the edit projects. After 30 mins of inactivity I had to force quit FCP.

Then I deleted the cache from the external folder and tried again. The library opened without going through the update process and everything seems intact. (I don't know whether deleting the cache made any difference.)

I'm glad it seems to be working but this kind of quirky behaviour and having to use work-arounds doesn't inspire confidence! My previous experience with library updates through many FCP updates is that they've always worked flawlessly. I wonder if there's a library update bug in FCP 11.0?
