Cannot erase Time Machine backup disk

My TM backups won't run because there is not enough disk space, so I am trying to reformat the disk and remove the partitions (giving it more room). I removed the disk from the TM settings and now am trying to erase this disk. I get an error saying that operation failed. The disk could not be unmounted because "systemmigrationd" is using it. How do I go about solving this issue. I am on a Macbook Air with Sonoma 14.5. Thanks.
