To restore or not to restore

I recently purchased an iPhone 16. I have not experienced any problems with my photos but now, suddenly, when I try to open Photos on my MacBook, all I get is a screen that says "Restoring" with a "progress" bar below that says, without changing: 0% complete.

Give us more information:

  • What OS on your Mac?
  • Is it iOS 18 on the phone?
  • Do you use iCloud Photos?
  • Do you have "Optimize Storage" checked on your MacBook?
  • Do you have "Optimize Storage" checked on your iPhone?
  • On your Mac, is the Library in the Pictures folder on your internal drive?
  • When did you last back up your Library with Time Machine or equivalent?
