Reducing Disk space for applications

Looking to optimize my 1tb internal disk space. System Settings>Storage shows I'm using 195gb of space for Applications. However, in my Finder Window I have no more than 40gb listed. Where do I access this 155gb of additional space? Obviously I would like to delete any and all files that I can - so how do I determine what I can erase and what I need to keep?
