App Store Purchases In a Family Group

Okay, so I recently switched to Apple because my wife loves it. Admittedly, up until this exact moment, I was enjoying it as well.

She created a family group because why not, we can share our stuff, seemed like a great idea seeing as we are in fact a family.

The thing is, I'm 47 years old, and I find it weird that I now can't make any purchases at all without first asking her and trying to use her payment method rather than my own. Am I missing something? Is there a way to make it so I can use my credit card? And please don't say use a gift card, because I'm sorry that's dumb. There has to be an "I'm an adult let me use my own money" option somewhere that I can't find right? Right?

  • To use your own payment method, you will need to turn off Purchase Sharing. You can still share all subscriptions with Purchase Sharing turned off, and it will allow each member of the family to use their own payment method.

  • If you are having to ask permission to make purchases, then your wife has set up Ask to Buy on your account. That would depend on how she set up your account as it usually only affects users who have had their Apple ID set up with them being under 18.
