I have a large number of PICT*.jpg files in the iPhoto library on my decade-old MacBook Pro. I know they are there because they appear in the proper folders in iPhoto. I want to copy them to an SD card. The problem: I can’t find them in any Finder window.

Drag or export them from within the iPhoto application; its library isn't intended to be accessed in the Finder.
