Dual Monitor Wake-From-Sleep Problem
Hello,
This inquiry concerns how my LG HDR 5K 34BK95U-W and 24" Apple Cinema Display monitors interact with my Mac Studio when the Studio wakes up from sleep.
I have a 2-monitor setup. The 34BK95U-W is the primary monitor connected to a Thunderbolt 3 port, and a 24" Apple Cinema Display is the secondary monitor connected to the HDMI port through an HDMI to DVI adapter. The OS is 15.1.1 Sequoia.
When the system boots up, it completes the boot process in the correct state. The Cinema Display enables first, displaying the boot progress bar. Well before boot up finishes, the 34BK95U-W enables, now displaying the boot progress bar. When boot up completes, the 34BK95U-W is the primary monitor with the Mac menu bar at the top indicating such. The Cinema Display is the secondary monitor. All windows on both monitors are arranged as they were before shutdown.
When the system wakes from sleep, one of the following happens:
1. The Cinema Display enables first as the primary monitor. All windows on both monitors are gathered to it. Then, the 34BK95U-W enables and becomes the primary monitor. This takes anywhere from 5-15 seconds. Usually before the 34BK95U-W enables, it displays a "No Signal Detected" or possibly "Entering Low Power Mode" banner. All the windows, including those on the Cinema display before the Studio slept, switch to the 34BK95U-W. This really prevents leaving windows on the Cinema Display, as they are moved to the 34BK95U-W, and behind its windows. This is by far the most probable sequence.
2. The Cinema Display enables first as the primary display. All windows on both monitors are gathered to it. Then, the 34BK95U-W enables as and remains the secondary monitor. I can fix this by rebooting from the menu bar on the Cinema Display or by dragging the menu bar to the 34BK95U-W in System Settings > Monitors, then re-arranging the windows. This is the next most probable sequence.
3. The Cinema Display enables as the primary display, but the 34BK95U-W never enables; remaining black. I can fix this by rebooting from the menu bar on the Cinema Display. This is a very low probability occurrence.
4. The Cinema Display enables as the primary display. The 34BK95U-W never enables, but becomes the primary display anyway, leaving no menu bar at all. The secondary monitor displays no windows. To fix this, I have to do a hard shutdown and startup with the power button on the Studio. This is the lowest probability occurrence.
I tried connecting the Cinema Display to one of the Thunderbolt ports with an adapter, but couldn't find one that didn't have severe video issues. The two I tried either had digital image memory or inserted patterns into the image.
1. Is there a way to force the Thunderbolt port to enable first when waking from sleep so its monitor is the primary monitor?
2. Do you know of an HDMI to DVI adapter or cable that will work without injecting video artifacts?
Thanks.
