Gmail app on my iPhone 15 freezing post iOS 18.1.1 update.

Using iPhone 15

Everything was normal.

Installed update last night.

Today Gmail is freezing constantly.

For example, to change emails I plan to keep to “read” status in my inbox, I tap on the email (opening it) and then when in the email I either swipe right or tap the back arrow to return to inbox. I like to do many of these in quick succession to get rid of the amount of unread emails I have. Just like everyone does.

However, once an email is opened, it freezes on the opened page and I have to exit the Gmail app to unfreeze it. About every second or third email in a row is freezing.

Sometimes while in my inbox I tap an email, it unhighlights it (as if it’s been read) and the whole app freezes.

Anyone else??

I’ll be on the phone with Apple tomorrow.

Hi saket20,

OH Mr. Pachai from Google called and was extremely concerned as to why his company’s app isn’t acting right on Apple’s phone HAHAHAHA

Yeah no resolution yet. Called Apple (again) a few days ago because I saw there’s now an ios 18.2 update. I have multiple glitching issues with my iPhone 15 and my first thought was: what if it gets worse? Which is weird because I’m optimistic by nature. I was able to replicate all my issues while screensharing with the Apple tech support person. They confirmed what the first Apple person said— this is a Google app issue. He also searched and confirmed that issues of this exact nature go back to 2017.

At this point I am defeated and will live with the glitchy app. I briefly tried using Apple’s mail app again but it’s so archaic and an obvious downgrade from Gmail’s app —glitches and all.

Anyways I have two or three other major glitches that have become more annoying so I’m focusing on them for now.

If the new ios fixes anything I’ll try to update here…but somehow I doubt Google is super eager to make iPhones work perfectly (just a hunch)

..Edit: the Apple tech person confirmed the Gmail glitching/freezing/crashing issue has been known since iOS 17 (Not 2017)

OP.. again.

Really? I’m the only one?

I’ve uninstalled Gmail app; restarted phone twice now.

I even reinstalled the Mail app to consider using it again… man it is SO archaic in functionality compared to Gmail app (no automatic promo filing, what??!!).

I guess my options are I’m stuck closing out and reopening my app every time it freezes. Less frustrating than micromanaging Mail’s filing system

Edited to add: I reached out to Gmail but no response
