Upgrading from iPhone 8 Plus, and I want to confirm the differences between 15 Plus and 14 Pro Max.

I'm upgrading from an iPhone 8 Plus, and was initially considering a refurbished iPhone 15 Plus. My goal is to get a great battery, a ton of storage, and delay needing to upgrade again in the future for as long as possible.

However, after comparing it with the iPhone 14 Pro Max, the two seem virtually identical. The only real differences seem to be:

- Aluminum frame (15P) versus stainless steel frame (14PM): Is one better than the other? I'm planning to get a Pelican-brand case, which is what has kept my iPhone 8 Plus intact for years.

- 26 hours of video playback (15P) versus 29 hours (14PM), yet 14PM has 95 hours of audio playback versus 15P's 100 hours. Still, that presumably means a better battery in all aspects on the 14PM?

- USB-C port (15P) versus Lightning (14PM)

- 14PM has identical display specs to 15P, but also has "ProMotion technology with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz" and "Always-On Display"

Beyond that, every single comparison I'm seeing on the Apple website seems to say the 14PM is "the same as 15P, or better/more". And I'm seeing refurbished 14PM going for cheaper than refurb'd 15P. Would there be ANY reason to consider still going for the 15P instead of the 14PM?

For reference, I primarily use my phone for YouTube, Twitch, a couple social media sites, Pokemon GO, a handful of other games, various helpful applications (e.g. maps, fast food apps, shopping apps), and some light music streaming (which I could circumvent by just downloading it). I'd be interested in exploring other options/features with the expanded storage & performance improvements, though.

Thank you for the responses! Replying to both of your comments:

Apple Intelligence - I'm personally not interested in its features, so I was aiming for the 15 Plus or below to get all/most other available features for cheaper.

Future iOS ineligibility - That's admittedly not much of a concern of mine. My iPhone 8 Plus took until late 2023 to become ineligible for an OS update, and yet I've been happy still going with iOS 16 on it. Only upgrading now because of storage space problems & a malfunctioning charging port.

Future obsolescence - As long as my intended phone case & screen protector work as well as they did for my iPhone 8 Plus, then I'm not concerned about ineligibility for hardware service either. Freak accidents can happen, of course, but I've historically been good about not having my iPhones break.

Between your responses and a couple others I've received, it definitely seems like the 14 Pro Max is the way to go for me. I'll shop around for some good refurbishment sellers. Thanks again for your input!

According to MacTracker, both phones have a 3.5 GHz Apple A16 Bionic processor with 6 CPU cores, 5 GPU cores, and 16 Neural Engine cores. Both have 6 GB of RAM.

According to Apple's site, both are compatible with iOS 18 but neither is compatible with Apple Intelligence . (All of the devices that are compatible with Apple Intelligence have at least 8 GB of RAM.)

Apple – Compare iPhone models – iPhone 14 Pro Max vs. iPhone 15 Plus vs. …

Apple discontinued the iPhone 14 Pro Max in September 2023. I believe that as far as hardware service (other than battery service) goes, it will become Vintage in September 2028, Obsolete in September 2030. Apple still sells the iPhone 15 Plus as part of their new product line.

Even though both use the same processor chip and have the same amount of RAM, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is a year older. I don't know what effect that will have on eligibility for future iOS updates.
