macos dock icons don't show red alert badges (like on ios)

As with almost everyone on here, I have both a laptop and my phone. On iOS every app icon displays a red unread alert number badge if there are alerts for that app unread. But on MacOS this is not the case. With the laptop open and the dock displayed across the bottom, I can see the difference between the phone and the mac. The very same apps on both, yet the badges always appear in real time on the phone but not on the laptop. Sometimes, the mail icon in the dock will show the badge, but inconsistently. Otherwise, none of the other apps show anything.

Why?
