CarPlay doesn’t work with iOS 18

I have a 2019 Mazda Miata and have been using CarPlay in it since I bought it in 2018, without problems. I recently upgraded from iPhone 14 Pro to 16 Pro, and CarPlay has not worked since. Although I traded in the iPhone 14, I still keep an iPhone X as a spare (it runs OS16.7.10), and it still works with CarPlay. I called Apple support and they told me it must be a problem with my car. I had seen posts here discussing this issue, with hundreds of “me toos”, but now I can’t find them anymore. What’s up, Apple?

Is your iPhone updated to latest iOS version 18.1.1 released just 2 days ago? What other troubleshooting steps have you tried?

It’s possible that the head unit needs an update. Your Mazda dealership would be able to advise you on that?

Are you connecting via Bluetooth or a cable?

i am indeed now running 18.1.1, and checked with the car tech support to see whether there is a new firmware update (there isn’t). I’m connecting via cable, since my car doesn’t support CarPlay via Bluetooth, and I’ve tried several cables. I reinitialized the car system, and that didn’t help. I’ve also tested various settings on Siri, turned off Apple Intelligence, ensured I’m not running VPN, and tried to delete the phone from my car (I couldn’t, since it doesn’t recognize it in the first place).

The good news is, I called back Apple tech support and got a senior advisor, and she led me through all possible/known troubleshooting steps. Bad news is, it still won’t work. But at least it’s being sent up to Apple Engineering for a solution now. I’m hoping for the best.
