iphone/ipad rapidly disconnect and reconnect from router

I have 2 different routers but they are essentially the same router. An Asus RT-AC68U and a Tenda AC1900(AC15). My laptop and desktop will connect to these routers with no issue. Any iOS device that tries to connect will look like it's going to connect for about 1.5 seconds and then disconnect for about a second and then reconnect for a second. It will do this forever until I turn off the wifi or Forget the network. I have reset network setting on the ios device. I have updated the Firmware on the router. I downgraded the firmware on the routers. I've tried various setting within the iphone and the routers but nothing has helped. Google searches show people with connection issues but nothing that sounded like what I'm dealing with. A lot of posts say to just get a new router but one of these routers was working for a long time up until 2 days ago. I reset the router to repurpose it and this is what I have run into.

I am having the same issues with two iPads on an Asus AX4200. Both devices running the latest iOS version. Getting various error log messages on the router for only these devices. Have a number of iPhones and one of these has been disconnected in similar way just once but the others remain connected. It appears to be the 5GHz radio that is having problem, but I have yet to confirm that. Devices appear to work fine on 2.4GHz. My MBP works fine on 5GHz.

There seems to be no preamble to new association messages in the router logs other than a weak signal notification followed by a disconnect prior to the failed association requests. Both iPads are typically within 3m of the router.

The common issue appears to be Asus routers. Following a major issue regarding a fatal DNS response causing a security situation on my router when in a specific configuration, Asus simply wouldn't work with me. I am somewhat disinclined to contact them over this without any supporting evidence from the iPads. Some idea on how to extract system logs to see what they are reporting would be useful.
