Follow the steps provided here in this support article and never remove the device from your Find My. The device will remain useless to the thief as long as it remains in Find My. Be aware of links claiming to be from Apple trying to get you to enter your account information as the thief will be looking to get you to give them your account information. File a stolen property report with your local police department. They may not do anything, but can't stop you from filing a report.

Don't attempt to go to the location yourself. It could be very dangerous. The sad reality is the vast majority of stolen phone are never returned. If your local authorities aren't willing to help, there's no one I can suggest you turn to.
